Who of us travel enthusiasts doesn’t dream of sleeping in an igloo hotel for once in their life? Somewhere in a snow-covered landscape at the end of the world that you can only reach with a dog sled. Where you see the northern lights dance above you and nothing can be heard but the crunch of the snow under your feet. Oh, what a wonderful idea!

For us this dream has now become a reality. Ok, ok, I admit: our overnight stay didn’t look exactly as described. BUT it was an absolutely insane experience and in my article I rave about it to you a little. And give you a few tips for your own overnight stay in an igloo or ice hotel hotel.

Where Is The Igloo Hotel Davos And How Do I Get There?

Our igloo dream came true in Davos, Switzerland. The igloo hotel or igloo village is located on the ski slope from the Weissfluhjoch down to the Parsennhütte. On the one hand, you have the option of skiing or snowboarding right up to the door. Or you can do it like us and walk there in about twenty minutes with snowshoes.

No matter which variant you choose – the meeting point for all guests is the Weissfluhjoch restaurant around 4 p.m. Here you will get a short briefing before you go to the hotel in groups.

With Snowshoes to the Ice Hotel

For us we went down the slopes with snowshoes and that alone was an experience! The sun was setting slowly, turning the mountains pink. Winter sports enthusiasts were no longer out and about and it was absolutely quiet around us. There was not a cloud in the sky and so it promised to be a starry night.

When we arrived at the Igloo Hotel, we gathered around the ice bar, which is reception, bar and lounge in one. Here there was a homemade mulled wine or a tea as a welcome.

The Igloo Hotel Davos has a different motto every year, according to which the hotel is designed by two ice artists from Holland and Ireland. This year it was “Bella Italia” and the ice bar showed sculptures and buildings from Rome. It’s really impressive what you can do with ice and snow.

How many people can stay at the Igloo Hotel Davos?

When we visited, we were only twelve guests. The igloo village can accommodate up to 46 people. The weekends in particular are often fully booked, so you should make your reservation in good time.

How is such an Igloo hotel actually built?

Before the rooms were allocated, there was a short tour of the ice hotel and a lot was explained to us. Among other things, we learned how the hotel is rebuilt every year. As you can see in the photos, these are not classic igloos made of blocks of ice. That would be far too time-consuming.

Instead, the inventor of the igloo village came up with a new technology and had it patented. He had special balloons made in different sizes. These are inflated and then covered with snow. The snow is then given some time to set and solidify. Finally, the air is let out of the balloon and the room is then “plastered” from the inside and prepared.

CAN THE IGLOO HOTEL COLLAPSE IF IT IS TOO WARM?

No, you don’t have to worry about that. The hotel melts gradually from top to bottom in the spring. During the season, it is also regularly improved and refreshed.

During our tour of the hotel Erik told us that even snow groomers drive over the chambers while the hotel owner is inside. And they weigh around 13 tons! Due to the dome shape of the individual rooms, the forces are evenly diverted into the ground like a church dome.

WHAT DO THE ROOMS IN THE IGLOO HOTEL DAVOS LOOK LIKE?

After our little tour of the hotel, we had time to look at all the rooms. And you should too, because each room is individually designed by the ice artists! So there was a room with chamois and mountains, one with the leaning tower of Pisa and one with a Venetian gondola.

There are standard double rooms, group rooms and romantic rooms. And they are really awesome – with roses in blocks of ice, a double sleeping bag and there are even some with a private jacuzzi.

Our room was also a romance room. Without a jacuzzi but with a double sleeping bag and ice rose! The motif was Florence with a lion made of snow and Michelangelo’s statue of David. Absolutely awesome!

ARE THERE TOILETS AND SHOWERS IN THE ICE HOTEL?

The igloo hotel does not have any running water, however, and there are no insulated water pipes here. Disinfectants are provided at the sink.

But don’t worry, there is a thermos with water at the sink for brushing your teeth. This should be used sparingly – the water first has to be obtained from snow.

So there are no showers. But you can enjoy a jacuzzi under the stars and a sauna, which is right next to it. A changing room is also there. That means you only have to endure the short walk through the cold from the changing room to the jacuzzi.

WHAT IS THERE TO EAT IN THE IGLOO HOTEL IN DAVOS?

First of all, in addition to the welcome mulled wine, there is also a small aperitif with Prosecco and Swiss specialties Plättli. For dinner or supper, as the Swiss say, there is a hearty cheese fondue with bread.

It’s strange when you are sitting at dinner in full ski clothing, with a hat and possibly gloves. But we weren’t cold!

Breakfast the next morning is served in the Weissfluhjoch restaurant. That means before breakfast you have to march up the slope first. But the walk was fantastic, the sun came up behind the mountains at that very moment. Just beautiful!

HOW COLD IS IT IN SUCH AN IGLOO HOTEL?

Speaking of cold – in the rooms of the hotel it is always around zero degrees. No matter how warm or cold it is outside. So when it’s really cold outside, you feel comfortably warm inside and vice versa.

HOW DO I KEEP WARM?

There are several ways to keep you warm. The most important thing is definitely dry clothes. The socks in particular should be dry, if in doubt it is better to change them. And you need good, warm winter shoes. The igloo village also provides Canadian winter shoes free of charge. We didn’t need them.

MOVEMENT KEEPS YOU WARM

Otherwise, of course, exercise helps. The Igloo Hotel Davos offers a short night snowshoe hike, for example. We had fantastic conditions, the starry sky arched above us, there was no moon to be seen so that we could see the Milky Way above us.

SAUNA OR FIREPLACE

After the hike, our guides made a fire in the so-called Koti – a Swedish wooden house with a fireplace in the middle. This is a heated lounge where you can play or just sit comfortably together.

And if you are still cold, the best thing to do is to go to the sauna. It’s best before you go to bed anyway. Then you are really nicely heated up and can cuddle up in your sleeping bag.

LESS IS MORE

But before you crawl into the sleeping bag: Make sure to take off the unnecessary layers! Seriously – the less you have on, the cozier it gets. Why? The sleeping bags provided are high-quality expedition sleeping bags with down. They have a comfort zone of -25 ° and they work by absorbing your body heat and giving it back to you.

If you are wrapped up so thickly that no heat at all escapes, they will not be able to keep you warm either. I was just wearing my long ski underwear and a thin sports cap. And I wasn’t frozen for a second. Even my feet were warm.

HOW MUCH DOES A NIGHT IN THE IGLOO HOTEL DAVOS COST AND WHERE DO I BOOK IT?

The prices vary depending on the category. The cheapest place to sleep is a group room and starts at 159 CHF, around 148 EUR. For a romantic room like ours, you pay CHF 259, the equivalent of around EUR 241.

You can book directly via the Igloo Village website .

WHAT DO I HAVE TO TAKE WITH ME FOR ONE NIGHT AT THE IGLOO HOTEL DAVOS?

So that you are optimally equipped, you will also receive a packing list from the Igloo Hotel when you make your booking. It is important that you can pack everything in a backpack. You have to carry your things over the slopes for another 20 minutes.

HERE ARE OUR TIPS ON WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE WITH YOU FOR YOUR NIGHT IN THE IGLOO:

  • Ski clothes that you will be sure to wear
  • Good and warm winter shoes
  • Hat and, if necessary, a spare hat. We had one warm and one
  • thin sports cap for at night
  • Thick gloves
  • Running gloves, for example good for eating
  • Long underwear, if necessary a pair of spare parts in case something gets wet. For example, I fell while hiking snowshoeing, luckily everything stayed dry
  • 2 pairs of warm socks
  • swimwear
  • Bath towel
  • Toothbrushes
  • Possibly. Wet wipes

WHAT OTHER IGLOO HOTELS ARE THERE?

In Switzerland there are a total of four igloo villages – in Gstaad on the Saanerslochgrat, on the Stockhorn near Hinterstockensee above Erlenbach and in Zermatt on the Gornergrat. In Germany there is one on the Zugspitze and in Austria there is another in Kühtai.

You can find an overview of the locations on the Igloo Village website.

CAN I VISIT THE IGLOO HOTEL WITHOUT STAYING OVERNIGHT?

Yes, you also have the option of simply paying a visit to the igloo village. The bar is open from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and you can come by for a fondue. Or just for a drink and to look around.

OUR CONCLUSION ON THE IGLOO HOTEL IN DAVOS

Just awesome! Really, it’s a very special and unforgettable experience. If you dream about it, we really want to recommend it to you. We always thought that this was only possible in Lapland or Greenland or something. We didn’t even think about having such a possibility very close by.

So go ahead, what are you waiting for?
